The 2006 conference continues this exciting trend and includes more new partners than ever. They recognize smart growth as a viable solution to the many challenges posed by growth; they may see it as a smart investment, an opportunity to spur economic development, and/or a way to improve the public health. With the challenges our nation is currently facing--at home and abroad--there are more reasons than ever to join hands with new partners and work toward our common goal of creating safe, healthy, and livable communities for all. The conference will draw a multidisciplinary audience of local elected officials, city and county staff, landscape architects, developers and builders, planners, transportation professionals and traffic engineers, public health professionals, architects, bankers, crime prevention professionals, realtors, urban designers, parks and recreation professionals, environmentalists, advocates for older adults and youth, bicycle and pedestrian advocates, advocates for social equity and affordable housing, labor representatives, and all others committed to building safer, healthier, and more livable communities everywhere. The program will include a dynamic mix of plenaries, interactive breakouts, "hands-on" workshops, preconference trainings, and evening salon sessions. It will also feature the latest on cutting-edge smart growth issues, implementation tools and strategies, best practices, interactive learning experiences, new partners, new projects, and new policies.

- National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference
- The National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference was inspired by talks of three youth in January 1999. Steven Worker drafted a four page memo proposing a National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference which was sent to various 4-H staff and supporters in January. A preliminary meeting was held in the beginning of 1999 in which fifteen youth from across the nation attended (it was on Internet chat). At that meeting, the people that needed to be contacted to make this conference happen were identified. After gaining the support from National 4-H, including Virginia Gobeli and Tom Tate, along with CYFERNet, Trudy Dunham, and various other supporters, conference planning began. The location of University of Maryland, College Park was identified as the place to hold the conference during the dates of July 8-12, 2000. Six youth and six adults formed the planning committee. They had phone conferences, emails, and a face-to-face meeting in January 2000. The conference theme was established, "Leading the Way Across the Digital Divide", workshops, Focus Teams, and State Action Plans were developed, recreation and assemblies planned., and delegate materials created. Over 200 delegates representing 30 states attended the 2000 conference. Delegates participated in Focus Teams which focused on a particular topic in technology to which they addressed; workshops where they learned not basic skills, but teach skills. "Teach how to teach" workshops were emphasized; and State Action Plans were states developed concrete tasks and goals to accomplish after conference.
